# A Mississippi Commissioner Wants to Let SNAP Benefits Pay Water Bills

A Mississippi commissioner has introduced a plan that would let families use Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Electronic Benefits Transfer dollars to pay their water bill, according to WLBT. The proposal is the first of its kind in the state and lands at a moment when Jackson's water system is asking for another rate increase.

The commissioner's pitch is straightforward: allow SNAP and EBT benefits to be applied toward water bills. The idea is that a household's assistance dollars, which are federally restricted to food purchases, could be redirected to cover a utility that has become one of the most expensive line items in many Jackson budgets.
